Kayleigh Hunter Named º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Perth Student of the Year
º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Perth is proud to announce Kayleigh Hunter as the recipient of this year’s Student of the Year Award, recognising her exceptional academic journey, personal resilience, and unwavering commitment to her studies.
Kayleigh began her studies at º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Perth with a Level 6 qualification in Childhood Practice. At the time, she faced academic challenges, but through determination, passion, and a deep commitment to working with children, she has grown into one of the most accomplished students in her programme. She is now graduating with a BA (Hons) in Childhood Practice, achieving her highest marks to date - including an outstanding dissertation result.
Her Programme Leader, Debbie Corbett, praised Kayleigh’s transformation:
“Kayleigh’s development in both academic ability and professional practice has been nothing short of outstanding. She embraced the Honours year - not required for professional registration but pursued for personal growth - and excelled. Her kindness, patience, and support for peers have made her a valued member of our learning community.”
Kayleigh’s journey has not been without significant personal challenges. Over the course of her seven-year degree, she balanced full-time work, caregiving responsibilities, and personal adversity. In her own words: “These last seven years have totally changed me. I’ve been pushed to my limits, learned what real strength is, and celebrated academic wins while navigating some of the hardest times in my life.”
During her studies, Kayleigh faced and overcame an abusive relationship, rebuilt her life from the ground up, and later became a caregiver for her father following a terminal cancer diagnosis, all while continuing her degree. She even completed her dissertation while supporting her family and participating in a 60-mile charity walk for Stand Up to Cancer, raising £650.
Despite these challenges, Kayleigh remained committed to her education, using her experiences to inspire and support others. She has been a vocal advocate for the BA (Hons) Childhood Practice programme, regularly offering advice and encouragement to fellow students across the º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ partnership.
Reflecting on her journey, Kayleigh shared:
“This degree has given me so much more than academic knowledge - it has empowered me, built my confidence, and shown me that I can overcome any challenge. I’m eternally grateful to the lecturers who supported me, especially during the toughest times.”
Debbie added:
“Kayleigh’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and excellence. She stands out not only for her academic achievements but for the inspiration she offers to current and future students.”
º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Perth is honoured to celebrate Kayleigh’s achievements and looks forward to welcoming her as part of its alumni community and see what she achieves next.
